stage 4 cancer & fibromyalgia warrior!

My mission is to inspire others to go out and live their life despite their health challenges. It may look different for everyone but, Cancer and Fibromyalgia has not stopped me from living mine. You can do this too by making a simple mindset shift and finding your own path to enjoying life again!
My journey with cancer started 3.21.2024 and my journey with fibromyalgia initially began in 1998. I am still on my journey battling cancer. I have almost 2 more years of treatment left but, I still live a very full life!
On my good days, you can find me snowboarding, paddle boarding, mountain biking, hiking, playing pickleball or spending time with family and friends!
9.24.2025

Here are the first 3 steps I took for my path to feeling better

change your mindset

I understand first-hand what it is like to be in a dark place with your health. One of the first things I did to make a mindset shift was to assess what is going right with my body and not what was going wrong. Do I have use of my hands? Yes. Can I walk? Yes. Can I see? Yes. Can I hear? Yes. Can I talk? Yes. Can I taste? Yes. Can I smell? Yes. The list goes on but, there were days when walking alone was grueling. There was a time in my life I have had to use a mobility chair.

Thankfully, that has not been part of my life for a very long time! My main point here is to be grateful for the things you CAN do. On days when I have been in excruciating pain, I grunt and moan, get myself out of bed, I open the blinds, let the sunshine in...and I still I thank God and I stand in gratitude for my life. Gratitude for my husband, children, family and friends.

Managing my mindset in turn helped me prepare myself to what I never thought I would ever have to deal with...Cancer. When I found out I had cancer not once did I ever fall into a dark place. I still experienced and continue to experience so much joy in my life. Even during the time my dad was diagnosed 6 months after my cancer diagnosis and later passed a month later. This not to say that I did not have struggles because they definitely happened during chemo. However, I overcame so many things in my life due to my mindset and my perspective on how I view things.

research

Along with fibromyalgia, I have a myriad of other health issues I have had to manage in my life off and on since my teens. Managing my health now as an adult feels like a full-time job itself.

Initially, when I dealt with my fibromyalgia I did all the things that the doctors recommended. Sometimes it helped but, I thought this is not sustainable. All they wanted to do is pump me up with pain meds. So I took to the internet and started reading some of the research and anecdotal tips for my condition. Of course, anything I read I took it with a grain of salt.

I did, however, read a book that really helped me on my journey to feeling better. That book is written by Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., "From Fatigued to Fantastic". I highly recommend getting this book. It takes you through all the symptoms you are experiencing. He then gives you recommendations on what supplements you can take and if that doesn't help or isn't an option he has recommendations for medications that may help you.

As for my cancer, I did research, my husband, who just so happens to be a scientist who discovers cancer drugs, did his fair share of research. He also had the brains of his fellow colleagues at work.

Research will help you take some control back. Figure out what it is that your body needs to feel better.

Tracking Symptoms

One of the main things I did for my path to feeling better was to take notes/tracking almost everything. From the food I ate, supplements, medication, activities, pain level throughout the day, and mood/emotions.

My main goal was to track and see what may have caused my fibromyalgia flareups and why I may have had certain reactions or side effects to chemo and immunotherapy.

I also track how certain activities made me feel. I do pay a price when I do all the recreational sports but, these are things I enjoy doing so I am willing to pay that price. I did, however, figure out hacks to help me feel better sooner than later.

It may be hard to believe that I am able to play recreational sports, especially with everything I am dealing with, from neck and back issues, fibromyalgia and cancer. I do have the will and besides I like to challenge myself. Which all leads to having the right mindset.

Don't get me wrong, I have had my battles especially in trying to do recreational sports after treatment. I just never let it stop me. There was a time I went mountain biking (8,000 ft. elevation) and EMT had to bring me down the mountain (no worries, it's not as dramatic as it sounds). Even after that incident it did not stop me from attempting to mountain bike at 10,000 ft elevation. I am happy to say no EMT was involved and I made it down the mountain!
